Tromsø in December: The Darkest Month, the Best Lights

December is Tromsø's darkest and most atmospheric month. The sun disappears below the horizon for good around November 28 and doesn't return until January 15. For 47 days, Tromsø exists in polar night — and December sits at the heart of it, combining the longest aurora windows of the year with a city that genuinely knows how to make the most of the dark.

Polar Night in December

The complete absence of the sun in December might sound bleak. Tromsø locals don't experience it that way. The city compensates with warm interiors, heavy use of candles and fire, outdoor activities that embrace the darkness, and a cultural calendar that treats the polar night as something to celebrate rather than endure. The polar night guide covers the full experience.

What you actually get each day: deep blue twilight from around 10 AM to 2 PM, with the horizon glowing in a way that's genuinely beautiful. Then darkness. City lights reflect off snow. Stars are visible on clear nights. The atmosphere is unlike anything in southern Norway.

Northern Lights in December Tromsø

18–20 hours of darkness per night means more potential aurora time than any other month. December aurora activity is strong — the solar cycle doesn't take holidays. The main obstacle is cloud: December is the cloudiest winter month in coastal Tromsø. Plan for 5–7 nights minimum to give yourself enough attempts. Use the forecast apps and be ready to drive inland when a clear window appears.

Christmas in Tromsø

Tromsø's Christmas market runs through December and is small but authentic. The city centre has good seasonal atmosphere — outdoor fire pits, local food stalls, reindeer at the harbour. Norwegian Christmas is family-focused, so December 24–26 is quieter at restaurants and attractions (book ahead or self-cater). The week between Christmas and New Year is busy and expensive — peak pricing across accommodation.
