Norway WiFi and SIM Card Guide for Tourists

Norway WiFi and SIM Card Guide for Tourists

Staying connected in Norway, especially in remote Arctic areas, requires some planning. Coverage varies significantly between operators, and in Finnmark or the Lofoten Islands you can quickly find yourself off-grid. Here's what works best for tourists visiting Norway.

Best SIM Cards for Norway

Norway has three main mobile networks: Telenor, Telia, and ice.net. For tourists, Telenor and Telia offer the best rural coverage — critical if you're driving to North Cape or exploring Finnmark's remote fjords. ice.net is cheaper but coverage thins out quickly outside cities.

Telenor Tourist SIM: Best overall coverage including remote areas. Available at airports, 7-Eleven stores, and Narvesen kiosks. Prepaid options start from around 200-300 NOK for a data package.

Telia: Good coverage, competitive pricing. Similar reach to Telenor in most areas. Available at the same retail points.

eSIM options: Airalo, Holafly, and similar services offer Norway eSIMs that work on Telenor or Telia networks. Activate before you travel and avoid hunting for a physical SIM on arrival.

Coverage in Arctic Norway

The E6 highway north through Finnmark is covered by both Telenor and Telia in most sections, but there are gaps in the stretches between Alta and Kautokeino, and on some minor roads. In Tromsø, Alta, Hammerfest, Kirkenes and Longyearbyen: full 4G coverage. In remote mountain areas or national parks: no signal — download offline maps before leaving towns.

Where to Buy a SIM Card

  • Oslo Airport (Gardermoen): Telenor and Telia outlets in arrivals
  • Tromsø Airport: Narvesen kiosk sells prepaid SIMs
  • 7-Eleven and Narvesen: Found in most Norwegian towns
  • Elkjøp (electronics): Larger cities, full range of prepaid options

WiFi in Norway

Norway has excellent public WiFi infrastructure. Most hotels, cafes, and restaurants offer free WiFi. Train stations and airports have reliable connections. In remote cabin accommodation, WiFi may not be available — check before booking.

EU Roaming in Norway

Norway is not in the EU but is part of the EEA. Most EU mobile operators offer "roam like home" rates in Norway. UK operators post-Brexit: most major carriers (EE, Vodafone, O2) still include Norway in European roaming bundles, but check your specific contract.
